Dissonant Tuning (ちぐはぐチューニング Chiguhagu Chūningu) is the ninth episode of the third season of the Hibike! Euphonium anime series. It aired on June 2, 2024.

Synopsis[]

Taki announces he has no more updates and asks all non-competitors to leave. Later, Masahiro notices the band looks tired and offers some uplifting advice. After practice, Mayu suggests to Kumiko that they switch places for the soli part, but Kumiko tells her to stop bringing it up and leaves. As Kumiko wanders, she feels a strange sensation and wonders if she's angry.

Kumiko and Kanade discuss Mayu and the competition. Kanade is okay with not getting a spot for the Kansai Competition but wants some cheering up. She criticizes Taki’s recent decisions and thinks the third-years should stop relying on him. Kumiko thanks Kanade for sharing her frustrations.

That night, the band celebrates with fireworks. Reina reassures Kumiko that they can play the soli part at Nationals. Kumiko asks why she didn’t get the soli part, but Reina is unsure and trusts Taki’s decisions. They overhear three first-years complaining about Taki, and Reina decides to scold them later for disrespecting him.

Tsubame and Mayu discuss the soli part and frustrations with Taki’s decisions. Tsubame supports Kumiko as president but acknowledges Mayu’s talent. She appreciates Taki’s impartiality. Later, Motomu asks Kumiko to check on Shuuichi, who is upset about Kumiko being replaced by Mayu for the soli part. Kumiko reassures Shuuichi that she’s okay with it.

Mayu again suggests swapping places at a vending machine, but Kumiko insists she focus on the Kansai Competition and help Kitauji win gold. As camp concludes, Kumiko holds a leader meeting at school to address lingering frustrations over Taki’s decisions. They debate how to keep everyone encouraged, with some leaders worried about Kitauji’s future after the third-years leave.

Reina and Shuuichi argue about whether urgency improves performance. Kumiko agrees slightly with Reina, frustrating her. Later, Kumiko, Hazuki, Midori, and Reina visit a store. Hazuki complains about the intensity since camp, and Kumiko explains the Kansai Competition is approaching. Midori expresses frustration with Taki’s changes and thinks Kumiko should have been chosen instead of Mayu for peace. Hazuki disagrees.

Reina leaves, and Kumiko follows her to a bridge. Reina asks Kumiko how she truly feels about Taki’s decisions. Kumiko admits she doesn’t fully trust Taki recently. Reina says Kumiko is failing as president if she feels that way and leaves.

Days pass without Kumiko and Reina speaking. Kumiko goes to Taki’s office, and he tries to hand her the clubroom key. The episode ends with Kumiko telling Taki they need to chat.
